Text Adventure Development System (TADS) is a programmy way of making text adventure games. They can include fancy stuff like images, audio, and text effects.

The official tools are Windows-based, but there are a number of ports to other operating systems, FrobTADS and QTads being the main ones. See their official downloads page for more info.
